Her extraordinary belief in the power of language – of speaking – to articulate selfhood\, confront injustice and bring about change in the world remains as transformative today as it was then\, and no less urgent. \nYour Silence Will Not Protect You brings Lorde’s poetry and prose together for the first time. Published posthumously in 2017\, It is the first time a British publisher collected Lorde’s work into one volume. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kate  \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to: Little Bookworms\, our new monthly book club for 8-12 years. \nFor April\, we will be reading The Floating Witch Mystery by Nicki Thornton. We will be meeting on April 7th of March\, 11am-12pm! You have until the day of the book club to finish the title – this is available to buy in store as part of your ticket\, or we have ticket-only options available. Following this meeting\, the book club will run the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworm’s to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. She made a workshop of herself and her surroundings\, combining creativity and activism in inventive ways. Determined to die in her own home\, on her own terms\, she stopped eating and drinking in 2019. In Intervals\, Brooker reckons with heartbreak\, weaving her first and final memories with a study of doulas\, living wills and the precarious economics of social\, hospice and funeral care. \nAbout the author \nMarianne Brooker is based in Bristol\, where she works for a charity campaigning on climate and social justice. She has a PhD from Birkbeck and a background in arts research and teaching. She won the 2022 Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize for Intervals\, her first book.

Amid calls for greater accountability and ethical awareness\, efforts are being made within and beyond the industry\, chiefly in the cultural and education sectors\, to decentralize fashion: to make the conception\, creation and consumption of fashionable dress and appearance less ‘western’-centric. \nSupporting this premise\, Hang-Ups argues that purposeful and permanent change within the fashion industry and fashion education is more likely if it is understood how the contemporary industry became ‘western’-centric. To institute effective change\, it is necessary to revert to first principles and understand how the fashion industry developed into what it is today. \nDuring a period when the concepts of fashion\, history and culture are being intensely scrutinized\, and with suggestions they are reaching their nadir\, the imperative to understand the extent to which they relate\, and facilitate the presentation of people’s fashionable bodies\, is urgent. Hang-Ups explores the origins and consequences of the fashion industry’s ‘western’-centrism by focusing on nine binaries\, defined in the crucible of empire\, that continue to be sites of negotiation as the ‘west’s’ traditions and ideals are contested by different cultural perspectives and changing global realities. \nAbout Dr Benjamin Linley Wild \nBenjamin Linley Wild is Senior Lecturer in Fashion Narratives at Manchester Fashion Institute\, Manchester Metropolitan University\, UK. Following this first meeting\, the book club will run the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nAs well as discussing the book\, there will be book-related activities each month for our Little Bookworm’s to get stuck into\, fun quizzes and games\, and squash and biscuits for all. Our Little Bookworms will also get their own book lovers passport to add to each month they attend as they jet set around the world through reading. \nSo whether you have a ravenous reader at home\, devouring books like the Hungry Caterpillar\, or you are trying to encourage reading and literary confidence in a more reluctant little one\, the Little Bookworms is an inclusive space for all and everyone. But in the semi-flooded city\, humans are\, quite literally\, on top: peering down from shining towers and aerial walkways on the fathomfolk – sirens\, seawitches\, kelpies and kappas – who live in the polluted waters below. \nFor half-siren Mira\, promotion to captain of the border guard means an opportunity to help her downtrodden people. But if earning the trust and respect of her human colleagues wasn’t hard enough\, everything Mira has worked towards is put in jeopardy when Nami\, a know-it-all water dragon – fathomfolk royalty – is exiled to the city. When extremists sabotage the annual boat race\, violence erupts\, as does the clampdown on fathomfolk rights. In intertwining Greek culture\, history and poetic influences with the contemporary queer experience\, this collection is perceptive\, lyrical\, and deeply evocative of time and place. From an Athenian childhood to a closeted adolescence in the shadow of the AIDS epidemic\, towards sexual self-discovery\, maturity and freedom – Tsolakis charts the pursuit of unconditional happiness. \nAbout Kostya \nKostya Tsolakis was born and raised in Athens\, Greece\, and now lives in London. He is founding editor of harana poetry\, the online magazine for poets writing in English as a second or parallel language. In 2019 he won the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition (ESL category). His poems have been widely published in magazines\, including fourteen poems\, Magma Poetry\, Poetry London\, The Poetry Review and Under the Radar\, and anthologies\, such as 100 Queer Poems (Vintage\, 2022). His debut poetry pamphlet\, Ephebos\, was published by ignitionpress in November 2020. \nAbout E Walker \nE Walker has an MFA in Poetry from MMU\, was shortlisted for Primers Volume Five (Nine Arches Press) in 2019\, was shortlisted in the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition 2020\, and was a prize winner in the International Ambit Poetry Competition in 2021. E Walker’s poetry is an exploration of queerness through our interactions with the non-human natural world\, specifically the world of invertebrates and\, more specifically in parts\, their intimate relationships. Inspired by queer ecologies\, entomology\, sex and spirituality\, the poems investigate Walker’s belief that non-human nature is inherently queer.

Rose\, whose stories seem to be set in some unidentifiable but vaguely Mitteleuropean nation\, and likewise have an uncanny sense of timelessness—the time could be some cobblestoned Victorian past era\, or the present\, or even the future. In these 15 dreamlike tales\, you’ll meet a forgotten composer who enters a nostalgic dream-world while marking time in a decaying Romanian seaport; two Russian brothers\, one blind and one deaf\, building an intricate model town during an interminable train ride across the steppe; a journalist whose interview with an artist turns into a dizzying roundelay of memory and image. Ghosts of the past mingle with the quiddities of modernity in a bewitching stew where lost masterpieces surface with translations in an invisible language; where image and photograph become mystically entwined\, and where the very nature of reality takes on a shimmering sense of possibility and illusion. \nAbout the Author \nC. DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are proud to present Autism in Women and Girls: How it Presents Differently\, a talk from Sarah Jane Nuttall\, PhD research student. This event will include a presentation and Q&A. \nTickets are £3 and are available to buy here. There are complimentary tickets available for anyone who needs one – please contact us directly on bookworms@houseofbooksandfriends.live or call 07597365380. \nSarah Jane Nuttall is an autistic woman who is researching autism in women\, looking at its presentation\, and the limitations of current diagnostic criteria and screening tools. She is also writing a novel to help women to identify their autistic traits. \nAutism is underdiagnosed in women and girls. They are also more likely to be misdiagnosed and receive a late diagnosis. Women of colour and anyone who is not a straight cis white male are also less likely to get a diagnosis. There is a need to spread the word on how autism presents differently in women and girls. Recognising autistic traits in females is more difficult\, as is getting a diagnosis\, both of which argue for a female phenotype. Pre and post diagnosis support are practically non-existent. \nThis presentation is for anyone identifying as a woman who has ever wondered whether they are autistic\, and for friends\, family\, partners and the general public\, of all genders\, who are interested in learning more about how autistic women and girls are more likely to mask and go under the radar. \n

DESCRIPTION:Following the success of our Lunchtime Lecture with Persephone Books\, we are over the moon to announce our latest publisher talk\, this time with Manchester-based publishing house Fly on the Wall Press. We will hear what it has been like to be a one-woman publishing house for the last 4 years\, and still achieving a four-time finalist position in the prestigious British Book Awards’ Small Press of the Year category. \nSince their inception in February 2018\, Fly on the Wall Press seamlessly integrates social activism into their literary endeavours. Isabelle Kenyon curates and publishes unparalleled political fiction\, evocative poetry\, and genre-defying anthologies addressing urgent global concerns. Fly on the Wall work with a carefully selected 12 authors each year to ensure that each publicity campaign gets the attention and dedication it deserves. \nThe talk will be on Wednesday 24th January and begin at 1pm for an hour. Tickets are £3\, and are available to buy here. \nWe will also have a number of Fly on the Wall books available to purchase in store on the day\, as well as those that can be found on our shelves throughout the year. \nAs always we have a handful of free tickets for those who would like them. Rather than a specific book\, we have put together our list of ‘The Book Club That Never Was’; all the books that did not make the cut for our meetings. Questions and talking points will be dotted around the room\, as well as copies available to buy in store in the lead up to the occasion. We will also have bookish bingo and games\, so no pre-reading required. \n \nTickets will be completely free; just show up and enjoy our café offerings as well as some delightful conversations with folks who have reads lots of the same books as you! After the twinkling lights in the Fleet Street coffee shops are blown out and the great houses have closed their doors for the night\, Sancho must dodge slave catchers and worse. The man he hoped would help – a kindly duke who taught him to write – is dying. Sancho is desperate and utterly alone. \nSo how does Charles Ignatius Sancho meet the King\, write and play highly acclaimed music\, become the first Black person to vote in Britain and lead the fight to end slavery? \nIt’s time for him to tell his story\, one that begins on a tempestuous Atlantic Ocean\, and ends at the very centre of London life. And through it all\, he must ask: born amongst death\, how much can you achieve in one short life?
