SUMMARY:The Feminist Book Club with Kate Feld
DESCRIPTION:House of Books & Friends are delighted to announce that we are hosting the Feminist Book Club with facilitator Kate Feld. Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In July\, we will be discussing Indelicacy by Amina Cain. \nTickets for this event are now sold out. Feminist book club returns on the third Wednesday of each month (August 20th) \n  \nAbout the book: \nIn an undefined era and place\, a cleaning woman at a museum of art aspires to do more than simply dust the paintings around her.  She dreams of having the liberty to explore them in writing\, and so must find the way to win herself the security and time to use her mind. She escapes her lot by marrying a rich man\, but having gained a husband\, a house\, high society and a maid\, she finds that her new life of privilege is no less constrained. Not only has she taken up different forms of time-consuming labour — social and erotic — but she is now\, however passively\, forcing other women to clean up after her. Perhaps another and more drastic solution is necessary?

DESCRIPTION:Have you got a little bookworm in your life? Then look no further than House of Books & Friends. We are excited to invite you to Little Bookworms\, our monthly book club for 8-12 years. The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor July\, we will be reading The Swifts by Beth Lincoln. As Nicola reads on\, an acute sense of affinity turns into obsession. \nShe abandons one job after another to make time for the archive. The litany of coincidences in the letters becomes uncanny\, and Nicola’s feeling of ownership begets a growing dread: should she be afraid of where these letters are leading?

A researcher with twenty years’ experience\, she went looking for answers. To her surprise the studies she looked at were exaggerated and misrepresented in the media\, forming the foundation for what she calls Good Mother myths. These myths are an assortment of narratives\, ideologies and stereotypes\, deployed to censure mothers and blame them for every societal ill. \nIncensed by the way bad science is used to shame mothers\, Alex Bollen decided to set the record straight. With meticulous research and keen insight\, Motherdom exposes both the shaky science and unjustified prescriptions about how mothers should ‘naturally’ behave. Competing visions of birth – ‘natural’ versus ‘medical’ – mean women can be criticised whatever happens\, raising the odds that birth will be a damaging\, even deadly\, experience. Mothers are judged and belittled whether they breast- or bottle-feed their babies. Bogus claims about brain development and dodgy attachment theories mean that whatever mothers do\, it is never enough. \nThis has to stop. We must replace Good Mother myths with a realistic approach to parenting. Alex Bollen proposes ‘motherdom’\, a more expansive conception of motherhood\, which values and respects the different ways people raise their children. Instead of finding fault with mothers\, Motherdom shifts our focus to the relationships and resources children need to flourish. \nAbout the author: \nAlex Bollen is a researcher with over twenty years of experience\, including as a former director of the research agency Ipsos MORI. She is a Postnatal Practitioner with the NCT\, the UK’s largest parenting charity\, and has been running postnatal groups for new mothers in South West London for over a decade. She is the mother of two children.
